Description
Visual Orchestra (2001, real-time interactive digital installation)
Visual Orchestra is a real-time interactive digital installation piece that provides a platform for investigating the synthesis of musical rhythms with visual rhythms. The installation provides a user-friendly interface that enables visitors to compose an abstract musical animation piece. Using a piano-type of keyboard, users are able to play back abstract audio-visual elements in real-time to form a dynamic audio-visual composition. The pianokeyboard interface was selected because of its ease of use. This digital installation was designed to be fun, easy to use and universally accessible to people of all ages and cultures while helping to foster creative activity.

echnical Statement

David R. Burns and his research assistant, Josh Gumiela, created a physical cubic sculpture with embedded electronic sensors and connected it to a computer, projector and speakers to create the Cubey 1.0. The Cubey 1.0 incorporates a custom patch created with Max/MSP/Jitter software that enables its electronic sensors to measure users’ physical interaction with the physical cubic sculpture of the Cubey 1.0.
