Description
Light installation in public space, 2011-present
Harbour, Bregenz (A), invited competition

Departing from ambiguous concept and image worlds related to terms like harbour, arrival, staying (also being allowed or having to stay), 'Floating Signs', one of the winning projects in the competition for the redesign of the harbour in Bregenz, critically deals with a notion of space characterized by geopolitical interests.
The light installation consists of a 4.5m-high, slender stainless steel column with built-in super-bright white LEDs. The light strip has a height of 2m and is visible through a slit. The work is inspired by the idea of the lighthouse as an orientation point in the night. It appeals to those arriving or taking a stroll on the waterside promenades, welcoming the people moving towards the harbour with ephemeral typefaces and visual codes in light. Like the selection of the words and icons, the dynamic of the depiction process forms part of the artistic concept. The slow, regular intervals simulate the typical trademark of lighthouses (long beam with short interruptions).
