About
Ellen Sandor is a renown new media artist, a Founding Director of (art)n, and the co-cofounder of Richard and Ellen Sandor Family Collection. Receiving an MFA in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1972-75, Sandor was interested in photography, video, and sculpture, as well as Outsider Art. At the beginning of the 1980s, Sandor conceived to conjoin these art practices together with other art forms including computer graphics. This idea brought forth a new medium – PHSColograms, 3D computer-generated sculptures and photographs. The abbreviation stands for photography, holography, sculpture and computer graphics.
Due to the collaborative nature of PHSColograms development, Sandor cooperated with scientists, artists, thinkers and technologists from NASA Ames, the University of Illinois, the Scripps Research Institute, Langley and Lewis Research Centers.
In 1983, Sandor founded (art)n laboratory based in Chicago. The laboratory has been producing PHSColograms for research institutions, private collectors and corporations. Since then the works created by (art)n have been exhibited by Musée Carnavalet, Paris, Galeria Arteconsult, Panama, the U.S. Department of State Art in Embassies Program, DAM [Berlin]. The works produced by (art)n are in the permanent collections of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Victoria & Albert Museum, International Center of Photography, Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art – the University of Oklahoma. (art)n Laboratory was commissioned by the Smithsonian Institution, SmithBucklin Corporation, the State of Illinois Art-in-Architecture Program, Museum of Jewish Heritage-A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, and the City of Chicago Public Art program.
Sandor co-authored multiple international and US patents granted to her for the PHSCologram development. Sandor is the co-author of papers published in IEEE, Computers & Graphics, and SPIE. She is a visiting scholar at Affiliate Graduate Faculty, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock; as well as a scholar of Culture & Society at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois. Moreover, Sandor acts as the Secretary of the Eyebeam Board, as an eDream Affiliate, and Advisory Board Chair of the Gene Siskel Film Center (School of the Art Institute of Chicago). She serves as a Life Trustee of the Art Institute of Chicago and is the member of the Board of Governors at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

CRISPR-Cas9: A Ray of Light presented at Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI)

The Digital PHSCologram Sculpture CRISPR-Cas9: A Ray of Light developed by Ellen Sandor, (art)n and multiple scientific collaborators was presented at the IGI Open House at UC Berkeley and donated to the institution. The piece presentation took place during the opening of the IGI Open House designed to introduce the public to the Institute's mission and research projects. Celebrating Women in New Media Arts

One-day symposium Celebrating Women in New Media Arts as part of 150 Years of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago presented the new book »Women in New Media Arts: Perspectives on Innovative Collaboration«, edited by Donna Cox, Janine Fron, and Ellen Sandor. The symposium provided deliberate context to discuss women achievements in media art and technological development from the 1980s till nowadays.
