The ARCHIVE OF DIGITAL ART features Lin PEY-CHWEN

Lin Pey-Chwen received her doctorate degree in Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong in Australia. She is currently the director of the Digital Art Laboratory and professor in the Department of Multimedia and Animation Arts at National Taiwan University of Arts. Her work has been exhibited in major art venues and museums all around the world such as Queens Museum, New York, Exit and Via Art Festival, France, 404 Art Festival, Argentina, Italy and Moscow, Taipei Biennial, Taiwan Biennial, Art Stage Singapore. Lin Pey-Chwen´s digital audio and video installation “Making of Eve Clone l”awarded the first prize in the new media art category at the 2019 Florence Biennale in Italy. :: Read about her education and artistic background on her ADA profile :: :: Discover works and literature about Lin Pey-Chwen on ADA https://www.digitalartarchive.at/database/artists/general/artist/pey-chwen.html ARTWORKS For years Lin Pey-Chwen´s works were based on the issue of feminism, culture and society. However, after understanding the relationship between man and nature, Lin Pey-Chwen became aware that nearly all the problems of mankind such as the inequality between men and women, wars, miseries, social disorders, natural disasters were caused by man´s selfishness, pride and conceit, failing to revere God. Lin Pey-Chwen felt that if only human beings could live according to the law of nature, the laws of their Creator, problems such as divisions and disputes would not arise. The improvement in science and technology was a great benefit, however it ruined nature and the balance between man and nature. Lin Pey-Chwen states that man and nature are inseparable, and in her work she tries to portray the vanity and crisis brought by science and technology to mankind. In “Back to Nature Series,” artificial nature emits heat and light energy, serving as a warning that modern civilization is but a shiny veneer that threatens to swallow up and destroy the real world. Lin Pey-Chwen’s art work, as “Eve Clone Portraits” is closely linked to engineering and High Technology. This first biblical woman stands for is all women and all men. Able to reproduce itself asexually, Eve Clone is a product of science. She is a prisoner in a virtual world. While studying abroad, Lin Pey-Chwen realized that Asian women have historically relied on each other to survive patriarchal oppression. She strongly challenges society’s stereotypically narrow space for creation, while realizing that women must break free of systematic restraints to develop individual styles and sow the seeds for an artistic revolution. “Antithesis and IntertextSeries” and “Classic Series” present an implied, indirect criticism that nonetheless far surpasses the nudity of Western feminism. Throughout her oeuvre, Lin Pey-Chwen has reflected about the contrast between mother Nature and human being´s technical civilization. In her solo exhibition “Artificial Nature” (2004) at the Art Center of National Taiwan University of Arts, she composed 5 pillar-shaped acrylic light boxes. She applied printed-out images of computer IC boards and flower patterns onto the light boxes to symbolize the shapes of industrial buildings. “My point was to mock the infinite development of technical civilization which is in fact a process of transformation using human beings themselves as guinea pigs. What the audience can see and touch is in fact an illusion. It is to bring up the question: What if `Butterflies` and `Specimens` become a sort of illusion one day and the previously existing `Reality` will be only admired, captured, and mourned for? If human beings don´t start to cherish Mother Nature what will we have in the end?” (Lin Pey-Chwen) QUOTES “Lin’s artistic attitude transcendentally conveys a deep interpretation of contemporary life and culture. Each of the series expresses subversive thought and implicitly warns against the great potential for technology to destroy nature. With a sincere sense of conviction and perseverance, these works present a unified theme, while pursuing philosophical artistry through an ultimate expression.” Lai Hsiao-Chiu, Curator “In an age when technology is developing rapidly, Lin criticizes humankind’s desire to become God and create life. Through dismembered limbs, mass production, and analogies to the Bible’s prophecies, Lin’s artworks prompt the question: Were people’s desires the driving force behind the progress of technology, or was it the rapid advancements of technology that inflated our desires? Is mankind held hostage by its own creations?” Chiu Chih-Yung

Artist Statement - Lin Pey-Chwen talks about her new projects

I am working on the next project "Making of Eve Clone II MR" which is an extent series of “Making of Eve Clone I MR”. Please find the art statement and the photos of “Making of Eve Clone I MR” in the file of Eve Clone Series“ for your reference. This project will have more film about Eve Clone's evolution and motion. I will also put an installation in the center of the exhibition space where participants can stand on the top and wear the MR installation to see the virtual film as well as the real scene. I hope to create an image looking like people are worshiping Eve Clone who is occupying the whole space virtually and seems like she is living in the real space through MR. I started to involve digital art when I was hired to be the Head of Graduate School of Multimedia and Animation Arts in National University of Arts in 2001. As my position and responsibility I set up lots of courses of digital arts and participated lots of digital art exhibitions, conferences, forums and digital art festivals all over the world since then. I even set up my own lab "Lin Pey-Chwen Digital Art Lab" to get together my students and lab members from technology and art professions to create many digital art projects and won many awards. I am fascinated about the cross disciplinary nature how artists can work with engineers, computer programmers and technicians together to create the very different and unique art contents and forms that is the non-digital art can ever achieve such as the interactive art installation, kinetic art, animation and multimedia art, computer generated images, internet art and etc., I was one of the pioneers of digital arts in Taiwan and initiate many digital art programs in my school. I also put many efforts to help my government to set up good policies and grants to support digital art projects. After almost 20 years developments of digital art in Taiwan, I think digital art environment is getting better and better. Many young digital artists are recognized by art museums and industries. They can work for their own artworks and won many awards, and in the same time they can receive quite good incomes, commissions and grants from government or companies through their art studios or firms. I am the director of "Lin Pey-Chwen Digital Art" and lead my lab members to create many digital art projects including the lab projects or my lab member's individual art or my own artworks. We have very good relationship to help each other although we don't work together in the same room. Usually I will find some good projects with government grants or industry's commissions. I will initiate the theme and the concept in the beginning but also ask for different ideas from my lab members to work as a team. Once the direction of the creative idea is confirmed by me, all my members will put their efforts in their profession to achieve the project. As for my own artworks "Eve Clone Series" I have my own concept and art development for more than 13 years. I always find the right people (usually two or three people) or manufactures such as computer programmers, animation artists or sculptures whoever is needed for my art project. It is always the process to look for the right people every time in my each project. However, I found the budget is always the problem if I cannot afford it, but I am lucky that most of my lab members are my students and friends. In the same way I will do my best to help them too.
