About

Eduardo Kac is internationally recognized for his telepresence and bio art. A pioneer of telecommunications art in the pre-Web '80s, Eduardo Kac (pronounced "Katz") emerged in the early '90s with his radical works combining telerobotics and living organisms. His visionary integration of robotics, biology and networking explores the fluidity of subject positions in the post-digital world. His work deals with issues that range from the mythopoeics of online experience (Uirapuru) to the cultural impact of biotechnology (Genesis); from the changing condition of memory in the digital age (Time Capsule) to distributed collective agency (Teleporting an Unknown State); from the problematic notion of the "exotic" (Rara Avis) to the creation of life and evolution (GFP Bunny).

At the dawn of the twenty-first century Kac opened a new direction for contemporary art with his "transgenic art"--first with a groundbreaking transgenic work entitled Genesis (1999), which included an "artist's gene" he invented, and then with his fluorescent rabbit called Alba (2000).

New Book: Eduardo Kac: Télescope intérieur / Inner Telescope

Created by American artist Eduardo Kac to exist only in zero gravity, Inner Telescope was made aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in 2017 by French astronaut Thomas Pesquet. It set the first milestone of a new form of artistic and poetic creation, freed from the constraints of gravity. This book introduces the reader to the extraordinary story of this art project, from its early days to its completion in space. An interview with the artist sheds light on his intentions regarding the performance aboard the ISS and the numerous works that came with it.

Since the 1980s, Eduardo Kac and other artists have explored the new potential of video and other electronic media, whether through art made for cable programs, interventions in live TV, or works for the Minitel network. They helped form a burgeoning global community of artists whose work took place outside the protocols of formal institutions and traditional media. This MoMA exhibition, part of its permanent collection, highlights pioneering video and electronic work and contextualizes participating artists' innovative explorations in the broader world of contemporary art.
